Destined: The Song I Wrote For You

The shed of tears when the church’s doors opened was from the countless heart aches, trembling of heart, and gladness of fulfilling his ultimate dream. He did not faint in love. He did not surrender even on the verge of giving up. He did not lose heart that in his lifetime he would see himself in front of the altar waiting for his best friend, his true love.

There was a hint for Yet. A woman’s gut feel that fails in limited chances. Never to doubt about, she was making somebody in their circle the happiest.

However, when their stars first collided, perhaps the time was not yet perfect.

A Birthday Song

“I was walking her to her jeep[ney] and I said, you know the song that I sang during your birthday? And then I can hear the nervousness in her voice when she asked, yes? And I said, I wrote it for you and I told her that I like her.”

In a corner of the Session Road in the City of Pines—Baguio, Angelo received a pacifying shoulder tap and embrace—the gestures of rejection that became more painful as he thought their friendship had ended.

It was uncomfortable and unintentional to steal joy from a person who used to be with you in life’s ups and downs. Balancing and dealing with her best friend’s emotions and her long-distance relationship at the same time made Yet uneasy.

“Magka-kaklase kami noon e. Chi-ne-check ko lang siya. Siguro lalaki magaling magtago ng feelings.” (“We were classmates back then. I was checking on him. Maybe because he’s a guy who’s good in hiding his feelings.”)

In separate paths, in different journeys and thousands of miles apart, they continue their lives.

“Being in the different countries all together sort of helps, but at the same time there was always, there’s kind of comparison. It’s like hand sanitizer, it takes away 99 percent of germs but there’s always that point 1 percent that stays. So that’s how moving abroad helps me and keeps me busy as well, but she never really left my mind.”

In Her Brokeness

Yet had an issue with her family after she graduated from the University in 2017. She became depressed and wanted to escape from reality. Messed up and broken, she could not be herself again.

But there was a saving grace.

“Nagulat na lang ako noon nag-message siya sa akin sa sound cloud. So, nag-chat kami. Ang sabi niya, Hi, Ading! “Do you still remember me?” Sabi ko, “Oh my God! ikaw yung nag-message sa facebook using a poser account.”” (“I was surprised that he sent me a message on sound cloud. So, we started chatting. He said, “Hi, Little Sister! Do you still remember me?” I replied, “Oh my God! You’re the one who messaged me on facebook using a poser account.””)

Their frequent venting out of problems and personal issues to each other made them best friends. Yet admitted that it pleased her. It gave her a sense of security that there was a man who understands her and treats her as no less than a woman. Without any malice or ulterior motives, they stayed friends for a long time until the universe changed their fate.

“May reserved feelings talaga kay Gelo ever since. Hindi ko lang pinansin. So, parang may secret plant lang ako na dinidilgan sa gilid nag-go-grow lang siya mag-isa.” (“I always have this reserved feeling for Gelo from the start. I just chose to ignore it. It is like I’m watering a secret plant that just grows by itself.”)

The Wedding Proposal

For the longest time of knowing each other, they never really had each other. No romantic attachments, and no “almost to-be.” They never thought of going beyond the boundary of friendship. Angelo and Yet did not anticipate they will be with each other for the rest of their lives.

“My mom, [when] we we’re driving to work one day and she asked me, what’s your plan with Yet moving forward, and I said, of course I wanna marry her and she said, just do it right.”

Angelo’s determination had flown him back to the Philippines. It was a return that begins his lifetime with Yet.

“Binigyan niya ako ng KitKat kasi favorite chocolate ko kitkat, so tuwa naman ako. Tapos akala ko we’re about to go na biglang may kinukuha pa siya sa pocket niya. Sabi nya, “Okay are you ready to do this?” Na-o-overwhelm na ako. Bigla na siyang lumuhod tapos nag-propose na siya.” (“When we met, he gave me Kitkat because it is my favorite chocolate. I thought we were about to go when he took something from his pocket. Then he asked me, “Are you ready to do this?” I was overwhelmed. He kneeled down and proposed to me.”)

Destined

Yet had walked in several places and distance, but this time she’s walking towards her piece of sanity. She’s now walking towards a new beginning with a man who genuinely cares and prays for her well-being. Tying the knot with the man who waited for her down the aisle has helped her get through all the distress and hurt.

“Para kaming pumasok sa tunnel. Tapos ang dami-daming pasikot-sikot pero ‘yung ending pala magkikita rin kami bandang huli.” (“It’s like we entered into a tunnel. There were lots unclear roads, but we still ended up finding each other.”)
